The Atlas mountains are young sedimentary mountains caused by folding, and their condition is still very raw and unweathered. There are jagged edges and dramatic cliffs, with several intruding mineral colours, exposed rock strata and a great deal of loose boulders and shale. Fossils are common and the river valleys are still quite shallow. The dominant colour is a soft pink terracotta. Descriptions like "Martian landscape" are hard to avoid. During our visit the snow-line was some 500 M above our village, so we entered its lower fringes occasionally but mostly what we saw was patchy snow and frozen pools with the real snow-capped peaks in the distance.
